Young men and women over the age of 18

If you are over 18, you can decide yourself where you will live and acquire your own place. But it could be that you have to move out of your own home and away from your family or others who are making it dangerous for you to stay there.

Social services can then help you with temporary, sheltered accommodation. The easiest way to do this is by ringing the municipality’s switchboard and asking for social services’ consulting unit. In certain municipalities there are women’s sanctuaries that you can come to, otherwise there may be a women’s shelter. If there is a women’s shelter, you can contact it yourself, without going via social services. There are women’s shelters in nearly all municipalities and these are associations which have been started by women to offer support and help to other women. The shelters have sheltered accommodation for women who need help and are often located at secret addresses. It can however still be necessary to move to a shelter in another town, in order to be adequately protected. The shelters have staff who are used to working with vulnerable women and young women. It could even be that there are other women staying there who have had similar experiences. These women can be a good source of support, in addition to the staff. You can also get help in finding your own place to live, on a longer term basis.

If you are a young man over the age of 18, social services can help you with temporary, sheltered accommodation. The easiest way to do this is by ringing the municipality’s switchboard and asking for social services’ consulting unit. You can ring them anonymously with your thoughts or questions. A centre for victims of crime can also help to answer your questions. Today there is sheltered accommodation for young men who have been subjected to honour-related violence. Regardless of whether such accommodation exists in your municipality or not, social services in your municipality have a duty to help you. Social services may have their own apartments for emergency situations or they may be able to solve the problem through the use of youth hostels or hotels.
